Four years ago, English illustrator Johanna Bedford
published a coloring book dedicated specifically for adults to awaken their
imagination and find a special moment to relax.
Without much expectation, the publishing house published
this compilation of sketches inspired by the Scottish gardens that require a
little color to be finished.
With 'Secret Garden’, translated into 14 languages and
with more than one million copies sold, the fashion of coloring books
"anti-stress" spread from Europe to the rest of the world.
Eye with stress!
And does it really work?
According to the American Art Therapy Association (AATA),
crafts and other artistic activities have a positive impact toward relaxation
and instant gratification.
It is known that one of the precursors in using coloring as
a technique to relieve stress was Dr. Carl G. Jung , who used mandalas
(essentially circular drawings) to open the subconscious of the human mind.
And is that, when we color, we allow our brain to disconnect
from daily tasks and concentrate on an activity that requires precision,
creativity and technique.
For the AATA, coloring connects us to ourselves by
generating an internal dialogue through art .
